Bipolar 1 Disorder
The bipolar disorder concept originated in the early nineteenth century. At this time, Jules Baillarger and Jean-Pierre Falret described it as a form of insanity reactions (Mason, Brown & Croarkin, 2016). Later, Emil Kraepelin, a German psychiatrist, studied the disorder and concluded it had intervals without symptoms during the early 1900s. He was able to distinguish the disorder from schizophrenia and described it as manic-depressive psychosis. Notably, according to Mason et al. (2016), the concept of this bipolar disorder was officially accepted as a disorder in 1980 since the DSM criteria have been evolving.
