Disability art is a concept that was developed as a result of the Disability Art Movement. The movement began in the 1970's, and 80's following a new political activism of people with disabilities. Disability art refers to an area of art where the context of art takes up disability as its main theme (Driedger, 2017). This art aims to explore the physical realities and conceptual ideas of what it means to be disabled. They explore various realities surrounding the injustices leveled at people with disabilities and the experiences of the same. During the onset of the Disability Art Movement, disability art was defined as art composed or made by people with disabilities and which reflects on the experiences of people with disabilities. In this context, disability art was restricted only to disabled people. Works of art which explored the disability theme but were not made by disabled people were therefore not considered disability art.
Over the years, the perception of disability art has changed significantly. Today, the disability art is inclusive of people with and without disabilities (Kupers, 2004). So long as a work of art has a disability theme and shows the experiences of people living with disabilities, it is considered a disability art. Alison Lapper Pregnant is an example of a disability art by a non-disabled person, Marc Quinn. This art is composed of a sculpture that portrays, Alison Lapper, at eight months pregnant. This artistic sculpture stands at Trafalgar Square in London and depicts the artist, with no hands and deformed feet in a sitting position. Such artistic pieces conveyed the struggles of people with disabilities through the eyes of non-disabled people.
